Giving Support

What is Our Role

Dear sisters,

This should be a very sobering post. If it isn’t, then I am surprised by the lack of sensitivity and empathy. I am also amazed by the lack of awareness of how debilitating it can be to live with depression, anxiety, and panic attacks.

Our mental environment is a common-property resource like the air or the water. We need to protect ourselves from unwanted incursions into it, much the same way we lobbied for non-smoking areas ten years ago.

Being an ex-pat puts people in a susceptible and fragile situation. Isolation and depression are real and compounded amongst the ex-pat community by navigating a new city, culture, and language, and the non-stop worry about family members that are very far away.

Daily tasks that were once habitually done and monotonous are now tremendous obstacles like mountain cliffs that need navigation.

As we have seen on the news, we are responsible for protecting our most vulnerable. I would hope that this sentiment would also carry weight concerning other people’s mental health.

Well, that is the main point of a support group anyway, and the point of this group and the point of the group rules. We do not tell our most vulnerable to stay off of social media or mute notifications if they do not want to read a post. We create an environment to protect them and an environment they can thrive in. They need a space that they can feel safe in.

We can thrive outside of this group in a manner befitting our needs. We are capable of following the news if we choose to. Some women may only have this group as a place they feel safe and temporarily forget about wars and plagues or anything that disrupts us. They may only have this group that makes them feel socially connected. It should be apparent from the women who recently left the group that we should be selective in what we post and repost.

I believe it is important for people to create a healthy mental environment in which to accomplish daily tasks.

Today it is coronavirus; tomorrow, it will be a war or mass shooting.

But today and tomorrow in this one small group should exist only hope and only posts that help us accomplish a calm and serene environment.

Thank you for your understanding!
