Ready for Your New Year’s Resolutions?

4

New Year’s Eve is a few weeks away. A time that is followed by broken resolutions and disappointments.  Interestingly, we make these resolutions while deep inside we know we have no intention of fully committing to them. The last time I made new year’s resolutions, I broke them all around 15 minutes into the new year. True story.

This doesn’t mean that resolutions are automatically bound to fail, it just suggests that our goals or the way we go about executing them is not suitable for us.  If you feel you absolutely must make a New Year’s resolution, here are a few tips to help you along the way:

  1. Make your goals as clear as possible. A good way of achieving this is to make them S.M.A.R.T:
  • Are you goals and resolutions (Maybe to keep the same as the rest, replace with: Is your goal SPECIFIC? Can you answer questions like what, where, when, why, and how?
  • Is it MEASURABLE? How will you know that you have achieved your goal?
  • Is it ACHIEVABLE to you? Do you have resources (time, money, energy, etc.) to achieve it?
  • Is it RELEVANT to you? Why are you making these resolutions? Are you trying to change something about yourself to fit in with other people’s expectations? Or are you doing it to honor your true self and live your life to the fullest?
  • Is it TIMELY?  Are your deadlines reasonable and realistic? It could be helpful to put several mini measurable deadlines throughout the year.

  1. Write down your goals and resolutions. Research has shown that we are 42 percent more likely to achieve our goals when they are written down.

  1. Be aware of what you are willing to give up / compromise in order to reach your goals and resolutions.

  1. Be committed to achieving these resolutions. If you have doubts in them, chances are these resolutions are not suitable for you, or perhaps you would benefit from support (see # 5).

  1. Find a support group, accountability buddy. Yes, this might put you in a vulnerable place, but it could also be motivating and give you exactly what you need to achieve your goals.  Discuss with your buddy the exact support would you like to get and how willing are they to back you up.

  1. This one is important: BE KIND TO YOURSELF! Getting discouraged or getting distracted is very normal and does not mean you have failed.  It only means that you are facing challenges and obstacles, which can present an incredible opportunity to move forward and grow.

  1. Set your intentions, be open to this amazing journey and get to work.

Happy slide into 2018 …

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.” -Neil Gaiman

I still cannot believe another year went by so quickly. I will try hard to keep my resolutions. 😁 My new personal quote is… I need to fix my boat before I take on passengers. # 6 isn’t always easy for me. I my own worst critic. 🙈 I love this Neil Gaiman quote. ❤

I know ! seems like 2017 just flew by. Thank you very much for stopping by and for sharing. Welcome to the club . I haven’t heard one person say they don’t have that inner critic and it’s definitely easier said than done to be kind to oneself . The important thing is to do our best and get reinforcement when necessary 😀
I LOVE your quote . I think it summarises my 2017 experience .
