10 Environment Friendly Ways To Look After Yourself And Your Home Using Baking Soda

If you don’t like using too many chemicals while cleaning, these tricks with baking soda can revolutionize your domestic chores.

These days big boxes of baking soda have been making more of a regular appearance on supermarkets across Jeddah. Hurrah my inner green-clean voice rejoices! With small children around, using alternatives to harsh chemicals has become important in our household. But how exactly can we make use of such a simple agent?

Baking soda, otherwise known as sodium bicarbonate, has many uses besides baking.

Here are ten ways you can make your own cleaning products and toiletries, which won’t cost the earth or harm it, either.

1- Air freshener

Get out your crockpot out and half fill it with water. Add three tablespoons of baking soda.

Place in the room you wish to freshen up, and plug it in. Turn it on low. Within a few hours, any odors within the room will be neutralized.

2- Easing heartburn

If you suffer from indigestion after eating acidic foods, such as tomato-based sauces, try adding a pinch of baking soda while you’re cooking. The baking soda minimizes acid in recipes.

3- Cleaning baby bottles

Add three tablespoons of baking soda to a pot of boiling water. Place in the bottles and other items you want cleaned for five minutes. Hey presto, clean baby gear without the chemicals.

4- Foot care

Baking soda can be used to soften and refresh the feet. Fill a bucket of warm water and add three tablespoons of baking soda. Add a couple of drops of your preferred essential oil, then soak your feet for 15 minutes. Give your feet a good scrub afterwards.

5- Household cleaner

Mix half a cup of vinegar with quarter cup of baking soda with two liters of water. You can use this as a multi-purpose disinfectant cleaner in the bathroom and kitchen.

6- Cleaning brushes and combs

Mix one teaspoon of baking soda in a small bowl of hot water, let the brushes soak. When the water is cool, remove the brushes and leave to dry. You’ll find your brushes free from dust and oil after this treatment.

7- Oral health

Baking soda can do wonders to freshen up your pearly whites. As a very basic recipe, you can start with two thirds of a cup of baking soda, and add water to make a paste to your desired consistency. Use as you would you use a regular toothpaste.

To make a mouth rinse, stir in half a teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of water. This helps to neutralize any odd tastes in the mouth.

8- Bug bites and insect stings

Make a paste from a tablespoon of baking soda with water. This takes the itch out of the sting. After thirty minutes, put some coconut oil over the bite.

9- Facial Scrub

Baking soda can be used to make a variety of facial masks and scrubs. Mix 1 tablespoon of orange juice, 2 teaspoons of honey and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Apply this mixture to a clean face, wait for 15 minutes, and rinse off. This mixture will brighten the complexion and fight blemishes.

10- Freshen up carpets.

Before going to bed, sprinkle half a box of baking soda onto the area that you want to freshen up. When you wake up, vacuum it up.
